Hello –
Thanks for the great conversation and especially for making it all work so easily! Here’s a recap of today’s meeting:
* Based on the survey results (thanks for the quick responses!), our F2Fis set for May 29 & 30 at the Big Ten Conference Center in Rosemont, IL. We will begin on Thursday at 8:30 and wrap up by noon on Friday.
* We developed an outline for our meeting agendas for the first four meetings of 2025, see attached. Thanks to those who agreed to lead the sessions – should be great discussions!
* We will continue to evolve that outline with topics we feel best suited for the F2F and for other monthly meetings. If you had ideas to add to that, please do!
* Given scheduling, our December meeting will be cancelled. Since the first Friday is on January 3, 2025, that may not work for many. Our next meeting will be Friday, January 10; a meeting invite will be forthcoming. After that, we will get back to our regular first Friday cadence.
Anything we’re missing? Again, thanks for being an amazing group of colleagues!
Kathleen & Ryan

Hello all –
Thanks for a fantastic Big Ten Engagement meeting; it was great to see people in person and share ideas! Also, thanks to all who led the different sessions, nicely done!
We came up with topics where we needed to do a deeper dive, some of these could be addressed at our monthly meetings. We also agreed that we need to convene more regularly, we’re looking for dates in May, 2025 (see below).
Topics that came up for further discussion (no particular order):
* Engagement Maps
* Examples
* How they can be used to better tell the engagement story
* Partnership between engagement and Cooperative Extension
* Rutgers and Nebraska are potential examples
* Advancement/Fund Raising
* What are strategies for raising funds?
* How do we bring that work together?
* Minnesota is one example
* Promotion and Tenure as it relates to Engagement
* Integrated approaches
* Program Impact
* Impact beyond outputs
* Reporting Engagement Impact
* A centralized strategy?
* De-centralized collection and we sort
* Where Engagement “Lives” on Campus
* Pros and Cons of various options
* Community Engaged Research and/or Teaching Symposiums
* Strategies and best practices
* Working with Academic Advisors
* Involving them in the engagement process
Questions for Big Ten Admin:
* Are there avenues through the Big Ten Academic Alliance that we can use to better promote the work of Engagement?
* Other ideas for partnerships?
We will discuss how we want to address these and who might lead the discussions during our next meeting on Friday, November 1.
Please fill out the survey to determine which dates would work best for a May F2F meeting. We’ll again work with the Big Ten Conference Center for space.

Hello all –
Thanks to those of you who already filled out this survey! For those of you who have not, please do so. Even if you can’t be at the meeting this week, your data will help us get a better idea of who is doing what in their roles and how to best position our work.
Thanks to Laurie for compiling the data!

Subject: Big Ten Engagement Leaders - Responsibility Survey (due 9/26)
Caution: Non-NU Email
Dear Big Ten Engagement Leader,
Prior to the Big Ten Engagement Leaders retreat on October 3, the group would like to update our understanding of the responsibilities held within our offices, as we know that these types of offices can be responsible for a wide variety of areas.
In this survey, which should take 5-10 minutes, we ask about the level of responsibility you and the units that report to you have for a range of engagement areas. These include:
Primary responsibility - you/your units are the lead for your institution in the area.
Secondary responsibility - you/your units are not the primary institutional lead, but have significant work and responsibility in the area.
Not institutionally responsible, but work in the area.
Neither have responsibility nor do much work in the area.
In order to report out at the retreat, we would appreciate your response no later than Thursday, September 26, at COB. Please complete the survey even if you did it before, as it's been several years.
Let me know if you have questions, and thanks in advance,
Laurie Van Egeren
Vice Provost for Public Engagement
University of Minnesota
