HI all,
Here is the guidance we received this morning regarding referrals to SSD. In my review, I believe that this is the approach we have been using when documenting these referrals in the past. That said, please note specifically that we should not be noting any specific diagnoses a student has disclosed to us or that they are indeed registered with SSD. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I visited with Deb Huryta, the ADA Compliance Officer. We discussed students' rights to privacy and the purpose of SSH. We agreed that there's benefit in having advisors, navigators, career coaches, CAST coaches, etc. know if a student they're supporting has already been referred to SSD. A referral doesn't assume a student's association with our department, rather it is merely sharing campus resources.
She was comfortable with the referral notes being shared in SSH provided:
* employees have gone through FERPA training
* the referral email does not include the student's disability (if disclosed)
If a referred student is eligible for academic accommodations and they decide to register with SSD, the student's registration with SSD should not be posted in SSH where multiple parties have access to the student's information.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Good afternoon all,
I wanted to share some exciting news in the midst of priority enrollment. We were notified today that Kristin was selected as this year’s Dr. Charles Riedesel Outstanding Academic Advising Award recipient. Kristin will be formally recognized at The Laurels event in the fall, which is the university’s annual awards reception.
Two quotes from the nomination packet that stood out to the committee reflecting Kristin’s excellence in advising read as follows:
“Faculty members consistently report that it is not unusual for them to make a mental note to approach Kristin for insight on a specific student situation, only to have Kristin approach them first to check =in about the exact same situation…Faculty can list many students who have passed crucial courses, or made graduation minimum thresholds, because of active partnership with Kristin – her hard work truly transforms lives, semester by semester.”
“The [student] feedback consistently highlighted these attributes: caring, kind, attentive, patient, empathetic, and understanding. I see these in her, I hear from others in their experiences, and she articulates these values in her work with students. It’s truly who she is and how she operates.”

Please join me in congratulating Kristin on this award!
