Mandatory training for PPVM students

Good morning everyone! It is hard to believe but the start of the VM1 Orientation is just 5 weeks away! As a reminder, orientation activities will be held at UNL’s East Campus on Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22. We are still working on timing details with some of our guest speakers but we will send you the complete Orientation schedule once it is finalized. As an overview, you will tour the PPVM facilities and learn where all of your classes will be held. We will also visit other helpful locations on East Campus. You will get to meet students, faculty, and staff, and several of these individuals will speak to you regarding services they provide and/or offer their guidance as you embark on your veterinary education. You have received an invitation to join the Canvas page: PPVM Student Resources (https://canvas.unl.edu/courses/38101 ). This is where important documents and links will be shared with students, including the Student Handbook, class schedules, elective course information, exam details, club and organizational resources, etc. You also received an invitation to join another Canvas page: PPVM Training (https://canvas.unl.edu/courses/38102 ). Just like if you were starting a new job, there is a fair amount of onboarding that is required when you start veterinary school. Some of the training sessions will be delivered in-person during Orientation. Other training and documentation will need to be completed online. Required materials and their associated instructions are available under Modules, in the PPVM Training Canvas page. You will need to pass quizzes at the end of certain training modules. Some of these quizzes will be completed within Canvas. Other quizzes will be completed on another platform and the completion certificates or other documentation verifying completion will need to be uploaded to Canvas. Required training/documentation and associated deadlines: * PPVM Student Information Form: Tuesday, July 29 at 8:00 AM * UNL Occupational Health and Safety Program Animal Risk Questionnaire: Monday, August 11 at 8:00 AM * Environmental Health and Safety Training: Wednesday, August 20 at 8:00 AM * PPVM Student Handbook Quizzes: Thursday, August 21 at 8:00 AM (available soon) * PPVM Student Handbook Agreement & PPVM/UNL Student Code of Conduct Acknowledgement: Monday, August 25 at 8:00 AM (available soon) We strongly recommend getting a head start and not waiting until the last minute. You will not be able to sit down and complete all of the training/documentation in a single session so you should plan on spreading the work out over several days. Class of 2029: Please read message below from Mindy Schminke regarding action you need to take. Please log into your ISU Workday account and complete the onboarding task as soon as possible. All PPVM students must be enrolled in ISU holder courses while they are attending UNL. The ISU Workday onboarding tasks must be completed before Mindy can enroll you in these holder courses. Financial aid cannot be processed and shared with UNL Office of Student Accounts until the student is enrolled in their ISU holder courses. For those that do not know, the 58th Annual AABP Conference "Focus on Value" will be held September 11-13th, 2025 in Omaha, Nebraska! What is it? A bovine-focused conference providing great networking opportunities (future jobs, externships, or just getting to know other veterinary colleagues) as well as spending time with other veterinary students interested in bovine medicine from schools all over the United States and Canada. Over the years, many ISU students have attended and enjoyed this opportunity. What will it look like? The days consist of different informational sessions on beef, dairy, clinical skills, practice management, research summaries, student case presentations, clinical forums, and small ruminants. Most meals will be provided, and students can attend evening social activities. We will also be putting together a few quiz bowl teams. Travel and Lodging: Each individual will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements, however, coordinating and carpooling with other ISU students is encouraged. Our club will block off enough rooms for everyone at the same hotel (as long as we have a count of who will definitely be attending). ALL STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE MUST STAY IN ONE OF THE AABP HOTELS. Similar to last year, the exec team has decided to fund a portion of students' hotel rooms, however, the exact percentage is yet to be determined and will be based on the number of members that apply. In order to receive this funding, the exec team is requesting an application. The application will consist of a paragraph on why you want to attend the AABP Annual Conference and how you think that your attendance will benefit you both academically and professionally (minimum 250 words). The selection process will be anonymous. Our team wants to be respectful of the use of our club's funds and provide members with opportunities to receive club funding in the future.
