Mandatory training for PPVM students

Good morning everyone! It is hard to believe but the start of the VM1 Orientation is just 5 weeks away! As a reminder, orientation activities will be held at UNL’s East Campus on Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22. We are still working on timing details with some of our guest speakers but we will send you the complete Orientation schedule once it is finalized. As an overview, you will tour the PPVM facilities and learn where all of your classes will be held. We will also visit other helpful locations on East Campus. You will get to meet students, faculty, and staff, and several of these individuals will speak to you regarding services they provide and/or offer their guidance as you embark on your veterinary education. You have received an invitation to join the Canvas page: PPVM Student Resources (https://canvas.unl.edu/courses/38101 ). This is where important documents and links will be shared with students, including the Student Handbook, class schedules, elective course information, exam details, club and organizational resources, etc. You also received an invitation to join another Canvas page: PPVM Training (https://canvas.unl.edu/courses/38102 ). Just like if you were starting a new job, there is a fair amount of onboarding that is required when you start veterinary school. Some of the training sessions will be delivered in-person during Orientation. Other training and documentation will need to be completed online. Required materials and their associated instructions are available under Modules, in the PPVM Training Canvas page. You will need to pass quizzes at the end of certain training modules. Some of these quizzes will be completed within Canvas. Other quizzes will be completed on another platform and the completion certificates or other documentation verifying completion will need to be uploaded to Canvas. Small animal involves standard primary care services (vac, spay, neuters, and examinations/internal medicine), and some advanced procedures like foreign bodies, GDV's, and tumor excisions. We have up to date working facilities and equipment with new load out facilities, new ultrasound equipment, digital x ray, new equine dental machine/equipment, and new Idexx bloodwork equipment. Weekend calls are rotated, so the prospective veterinarian would be on call every 5th weekend. We offer very competitive pay, health, dental, 401 k, paid CE, PTO, and paid holidays. We firmly believe in enjoying what we do, and try to make sure everyone can find time off for themselves, family, hobbies, or whatever else. Both electives are asynchronous online courses. As soon as you are enrolled and the courses are published in UNL Canvas, you can begin the course(s). You must complete the entire elective course(s) by the end of the fall 2025 semester to receive credit. * If you are interested in tracking food animal or mixed animal, note that some ISU electives are prerequisites for required rotations/courses during your VM4 year. These ISU prerequisite electives are noted in the descriptions. (It's okay if you don't know your track now. These prerequisite electives will also be offered other semesters.) You will enroll yourself in ISU electives using ISU's Workday Student. Instructions on how to use ISU Workday Student in UNL Canvas (PPVM-Student Resources-PPVM Policies & Information-ISU CVM Resources-REGISTRATION New Workday). * If you currently have a student academic accommodation plan through an institution other than UNL, we encourage you to register with the UNL Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) as soon as possible. If you think you may want accommodations while a PPVM student, please contact the UNL SSD office to discuss available services and the registration process. When registration with SSD is complete, it is the student's responsibility to contact each instructor to discuss accommodations. Hello, Class of 2029: Congratulations on your accomplishments-we are looking forward to seeing you in August and working with you the next four years. Below are some important dates and information as you prepare for classes. * Refer to the [?docx icon] Class of 2029 Admission Packet<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://uofnelincoln-my.sharepoint.com/:w:/g/pe… > that was provided during the Open House for more information, dates and deadlines. * Mark your calendars and save the following dates: * August 21 & 22, 2025--Class of 2029 Orientation at UNL. Orientation is mandatory. More information about Orientation and times will be provided later. You will not travel to Ames, Iowa for Orientation or White Coat Ceremony (you do not need to RSVP for the ISU White Coat Ceremony). See below for information about your White Coat Ceremony. * May 17-22 and May 25-29, 2026--Production Animal Immersion Experience at the Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center (GPVEC) near Clay Center, NE. This mandatory experience is part of VMED 512 Foundations in Veterinary Medicine class. The VM1s will be split into two groups (groups to be determined). Each group will stay at GPVEC during this time and participate in an immersive production animal experience. We realize these dates fall during Memorial Day weekend. More information will be provided later. * Spring semester, 2027--Class of 2029 White Coat Ceremony. Date and more information will be provided later. * May 10, 2027--Class of 2029 Transition to ISU Orientation at ISU. Attendance is mandatory. Hosted by Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine to assist with your transition to Iowa State University. More information from ISU provided later. * I have created a listserv for the Class of 2029. The address is ppvm2029(a)lists.unl.edu<mailto:ppvm2029@lists.unl.edu>. Messages sent through this listserv will go to all members of the Class of 2029. The listserv will be used by the PPVM office to communicate with your class in the future. You are welcome to use this listserv to communicate with your classmates but please be aware than myself, Dr. McFee, Barb and other School staff are also on the listserv and will receive any message sent. Please keep communications professional and appropriate. Right now, the listserv uses the email address listed on your VMCAS application. Once you have set up your "@iastate.edu" account, we will use your ISU email address exclusively. * I will let you know when your ISU ID numbers are available. Once you have your ISU ID number, you can register your ISU Net-ID and claim your ISU email address. When you have your ISU email address, please let me know so I can update the Class of 2029 listserv to your ISU address. * If you are new to the University of Nebraska system, contact me for your NU ID number if you need it. If you already have an NU ID number, you will use that number while part of the PPVM. * Watch for an invitation to the UNL Canvas PPVM Training course and the PPVM Student Resources course. The invitation will be sent to your UNL email address. Information about required training will be sent this summer. * You will enroll in your fall 2025 core courses using UNL MyRED. You will be assigned a group (A or B) for Anatomy and Foundations later this summer. Textbook information will be available in UNL MyRED this summer. * Note that all incoming ISU CVM students are required to purchase a mobile (tablet) computer through an ISU CVM negotiated bulk purchase agreement. The cost of the tablet and associate warranty and services will be charged to your UNL student account. The cost of the tablet will be factored into your financial aid award offer. Tablets will be distributed during Orientation in August. * Your financial aid is processed through ISU. You will view and accept your financial aid package through ISU's Workday student information system.
