Hi all, I just want to thank all of you who showed up for the retreat last Friday. I know you are all busy so I appreciate you taking the time to spend time with us knowing more about the department, brainstorming about how we can improve, and thinking about what your message to our stakeholders is. I had a lot of fun interacting with all of you and I learned a lot of good stuff. A special thanks to Susie that played a very important role in the organization of the retreat. And of course, thanks to Mo! He was a great moderator for the afternoon session. We will summarize the activities of the afternoon, and we will share with you, hopefully in the September Faculty meeting and/or in our next newsletter so that everybody can see the results. At the Nebraska Food for Health Center, we are studying if a mixture of beans benefits our health more than individual types of beans. You will receive up to $300 for taking part in our study. Hi all, Many of you saw me walking around with Catelyn today. Catelyn Bridges is a new Assistant Professor with the BSE Department and has a 20% research appointment with FST. She will have some lab space in FIC 215 and I still need to assign her an office. I just wanted to introduce her to all of you so that you can say hi if you see her around. It’s also part of Nebraska history. Kool Aid was invented by Edwin Perkins in 1927. At the time, Perkins was living in Hastings, Nebraska and running a small business called Perkins Products. One of his most popular products was a concentrated fruit syrup that came in tiny bottles. To make the syrup go further, Perkins developed a way to powder the concentrate, which he sold in packages that could be mixed with water to create a fruity drink. He initially called the powdered drink “Fruit Smack” but later renamed it “Kool Aid” after hearing his customers refer to it by that name. The first flavor of Kool Aid was cherry, but over the years Perkins introduced several other flavors, including grape, lemon-lime, orange, raspberry, and strawberry. In 1953, General Foods (which would later merge with Kraft) purchased Perkins Products and began mass-producing Kool Aid packets. Today there are more than 30 different flavors of Kool Aid available, including some limited edition flavors like tropical punch and watermelon.
