Hi all, It is with deep sadness that I must announce the passing of Carol D. Shafer (Julie McManamey's mother) on September 23rd, 2024. You can find her obituary at: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://metzmortuary.com/carol-d-shafer/__;!!Pv… : A celebration of Carol's life will be held at East Hill Church of Christ in York on September 28, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon at Greenwood Cemetery in York. A luncheon will be held at East Hill Church of Christ following the service, prior to the burial. Visitation will be held on September 27, 2024, at 6:00-8:00 pm at the East Hill Church of Christ. The FST Department will send a peace lily to Julie today to provide comfort and sympathy during these difficult times. In particular, projects in the Piepenbrink group aim to identify and characterize specific biomolecular interactions underpinning host adhesion, biofilm formation, DNA-uptake and motility, combining integrative structural biology with quantitative biochemistry, multi-resolution imaging and microbial genetics, and providing trainees at all levels with opportunities to develop as independent scientists. In addition to his appointments in the Departments of Food Science and Technology and Biochemistry at UNL, Dr. Piepenbrink is a member of the Nebraska Food for Health Center and the Nebraska Center for Integrated Biomolecular Communication. He received his B.A. in Chemistry and German Literature from The Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The University of Notre Dame. Summary: Dr. Brown will discuss several ongoing projects aimed at understanding diet-microbe-host interactions that produce bioactive metabolites that systemically circulate. She hopes that viewers find meaning and enjoyment in these fleeting moments. Tammy Miller is a talented mixed media artist based in Lincoln where she lives with her husband, Dave. Originally from Ohio, Tammy earned her degree in Commercial Art from the University of Akron. Her work has been featured in several exhibitions, including at the Bryan Medical Center's East Campus gallery and the Red Path Gallery in Seward. She also participated in the Serving Hands Community Art Project and created a Folded Flag sculpture displayed at the Lincoln Veterans Administration building. In 2019, Tammy was recognized as an Emerging Artist by the Lincoln Arts Council. Over the past four years, she has been a regular participant in the Lincoln and Omaha Arts Festivals. Tammy and Dave are proud parents of two children, Spencer and Hallie, both graduates of the University of Nebraska. In particular, projects in the Piepenbrink group aim to identify and characterize specific biomolecular interactions underpinning host adhesion, biofilm formation, DNA-uptake and motility, combining integrative structural biology with quantitative biochemistry, multi-resolution imaging and microbial genetics, and providing trainees at all levels with opportunities to develop as independent scientists. Watts selected to lead UNL Food Processing Center

Hi Everyone, The official press release will be out tomorrow, but we wanted to give you a heads up on our exciting news! Watts selected to lead UNL Food Processing Center Ellie Watts, an experienced leader with strong ties to Nebraska's food processing industry, has been selected as the next Director of the Food Processing Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She will begin her new role Oct. 14. Watts, a graduate of the UNL's Food Science and Technology Department, has held a variety of roles within Nebraska's food manufacturing and food processing sector. Over her 20-year career, she has held product development positions with TreeHouse Foods, Rembrandt Foods and ConAgra Brands. Most recently, she was the Director of Research and Development at ConAgra Brands. Watts credits her UNL education, which included hands-on work in the Loeffel Meat Lab, with preparing her for a career in Food Science. "It's been really exciting to work in so many aspects of food processing, utilize the knowledge I learned at UNL as a student, dig into the industry, apply that to new product development, and now return to the University," she said. Located on Nebraska Innovation Campus and Housed within the UNL Department of Food Science and Technology, the Food Processing Center is designed to support the food industry. The Food Processing Center provides a combination of consulting, educational, technical and business development services to both start-ups and established food businesses of all sizes. The director of the Food Processing Center manages businesses development relations, markets the center's capabilities, coordinates projects, and ensures the center's financial stability. The director also works to make sure the Food Processing Center is working collaboratively with the research, teaching, and extension platforms of the university. "The Food Processing Center plays a critical role in fulfilling our land-grant mission," said Rich Bischoff, associate vice chancellor for UNL's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. "Ellie brings a wonderful blend of leadership, passion, expertise and energy to her new role, and I am excited to see how the Food Processing Center grows and evolves under her leadership." Watts said she was looking forward to many things about beginning her new role. She is excited to work with university experts in microbiology, food for health and food allergens and other areas. She looks forward to meeting Food Science and Technology students, many of whom work at the center to develop foundational skills that serve them throughout their careers. And she is excited to work with food manufacturing businesses and entrepreneurs across Nebraska and elsewhere. "What I think is so exciting about the food industry is food is so personal for people. With food, you are nourishing your family, you're entertaining, you're taking care of your health," Watts said. Good Morning, On July 30th, Chancellor Bennett sent an email that UNL would observe an instructional continuity day on Friday, September 20th as Husker football hosts Illinois on Friday night. The Department of Food Science & Technology will be following this directive. "Only essential employees should report to work on campus; all other employees should work remotely. Employees should consult with their supervisor to confirm whether they are able to work remotely or report to campus. Her fascination with line and color drives her exploration of visual art, where she believes there is always room for growth and discovery. She hopes that viewers find meaning and enjoyment in these fleeting moments. Tammy Miller is a talented mixed media artist based in Lincoln where she lives with her husband, Dave. Originally from Ohio, Tammy earned her degree in Commercial Art from the University of Akron. Her work has been featured in several exhibitions, including at the Bryan Medical Center's East Campus gallery and the Red Path Gallery in Seward. She also participated in the Serving Hands Community Art Project and created a Folded Flag sculpture displayed at the Lincoln Veterans Administration building. I am Rachana Police a graduate student in Food Science and Technology department. My journey into this field has been driven by deep passion for food and the science behind it, as well as its impact on health. I have a keen interest in Food Safety and Quality (FSQ) and product development, which drives my academic and research pursuits. Outside of my academic pursuits, I enjoy exploring new cuisines and experimenting with recipes. What year of studies are you in? I am in my second year of the master’s program. It’s been challenging yet rewarding experience so far, and I’m eager to continue learning and growing in this field. What drew you to the University of Nebraska? The University of Nebraska Lincoln has a strong reputation in food science and the diverse research opportunities available here were major factors that attracted me. What aspect of food science and technology interests you the most (i.e. What is your research about)? I am particularly fascinated by food safety and quality control. I have completed my summer internship at Michael Foods as a Food Safety and Quality Corporate intern. My research focus on Quality Attributes of cumin seeds after treating with radiofrequency over storage. This work aims to optimize preservation methods while maintaining the seeds nutritional and sensory properties. What is your typical day like? My typical day involves a balance between coursework, research and assignments. I spend my mornings attending lectures and seminars while my afternoons are dedicated to conducting experiments. What is something that most people don’t know about you? Most people don’t know that I am an ambivert with introverted tendencies. While I enjoy socializing and collaborating with others, I also value my alone time to recharge and focus on my personal interests. What is your life like outside of school? Outside of school, I enjoy exploring new places, trying different foods, and immersing myself in various cultures. I find these experiences enriching and they broaden my perspective. Additionally, I’m an avid reader and spend a lot of my free time with a good book. I also enjoy crocheting, which allows me to relax and express my creativity in a fulfilling way.
