NFHC Food for Health Seminar Series: Visiting Speaker Dr. Daniel Merenstein Sept. 12th INFORMATION
by Susie Fauble 11 Sep '25

11 Sep '25

Hello All, This Friday will be our first Food for Health Seminar Series speaker of the semester. Dr. Robert Hutkins and Dr. Jennifer Auchtung have invited Dr. Daniel Merenstein from Georgetown University. Please find the flyer both below and attached for information regarding Dr. Merenstein's visit. We will be in person in FIC 277 on Friday. There will also be a zoom connection. [cid:image001.jpg@01DC2316.391173D0] *Information repeated for ease of viewing* Presenter: Dr. Daniel Merenstein from Georgetown University Title: "Clinical translation of biotic science; How can we enhance impact" Summary: Biotic science, encompassing probiotics and related interventions, has advanced rapidly, yet its clinical translation remains limited. Often when recommended and used products are not used in an evidence-based manner. Despite some randomized controlled trials, guideline recommendations often diverge due to variability in strain specificity, study quality, and external validity. This presentation examines barriers to the clinical impact of biotic science, including inconsistent communication, lack of adequately powered trials, underreporting of adverse events, and limited relevance to real-world settings. Drawing on clinical trial experience at Georgetown University, we highlight lessons for improving study design and translation. We also consider how knowledge, attitudes, and communication strategies shape clinician behavior, emphasizing the need for patient-oriented outcomes, transparency in guidelines, and responsible scientific communication. Ultimately, stronger clinical evidence, clearer communication, and thoughtful trial design are essential to enhance the credibility, uptake, and impact of biotic science in medical practice. Location: FIC 277 & Zoom Date/Time:  Friday Sept.12th, Noon-12:55pm (CT) Snacks & coffee will be available outside FIC 277 starting around 11:30am. Grammy-winning fiddle virtuoso Bronwyn Keith-Hynes is stepping into the spotlight. After several years of wowing audiences as the fiddler for Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, the two-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year is striking out on her own, fronting a band for the first time and bringing her voice to the forefront. Known for her fiery fiddle playing and pure, rootsy singing, Keith-Hynes’ debut vocal album ‘I Built a World’ earned her a Grammy nomination, and American Songwriter calls her “a world-class fiddler with a golden voice.” Keith-Hynes’ music blends high-octane bluegrass sensibilities with the soul of country and American Roots music. Backed by a powerhouse group of Nashville musicians hand-picked from her tight-knit community, Keith-Hynes represents the next generation of top-tier bluegrass musicians, who will be appreciated for generations to come. Hailing from Lincoln, Neb., The Midnight Wanderers started over a decade ago when husband-and-wife duo Matt and Jenny Richardson delved deeper into the folk tradition. Matt picked up the banjo, and Jenny gravitated to the upright bass. From there, they shaped their band and the old-time goodness of their setlists, with music covering the gamut of Americana. The Midnight Wanderers are a collaborative effort, taking turns singing lead and selecting songs that keep the set diverse. With tunes curated from many genres, including classic rock, Western swing, country and bluegrass, there is something for everyone. Inspired by travels with family and friends, Valery transforms photographs into paintings that invite a deeper, more personal reflection. Each piece requires careful attention to detail, reconnecting her with the memories of a specific time and place. Marbles, with their bold and brilliant colors, are treasures in their own right and reflect her fascination with vibrant hues. Likewise, the luminous array of colors found in flowers continues to bring her immense joy—an energy that shines throughout this collection. Valery Wachter is a dedicated member of the Lincoln arts community. She has served on the Friends of UNL Art Department board, MEDICI, the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Alumni Board and the selection committee for the Mayor’s Arts Awards. She is represented by the Burkholder Project Gallery and is a founding and current member of the Bryan Health Art Committee. Valery holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Her work is included in private collections across the country and her sculpture Nebraska Wildflowers is permanently installed on the Bryan East Campus. Visitor and Deliveries
by Susie Fauble 03 Sep '25

03 Sep '25

Hello all, We have had a few instances recently where visitors and delivery drivers have been unsure where to go once they arrive at our building. People (delivery drivers, food deliveries, people looking for other people) are also bothering the Food for Health clinic while they are trying to conduct their clinical trials. To help reduce confusion, and to limit the disruptions to the clinic, could you please remember these two things: 1. Please include your name on all deliveries and food orders. This helps ensure packages and meals get to the right person without delay. 2. If you are expecting a visitor, please try to greet them in the lobby or provide clear directions ahead of time. This will help prevent people from wandering through the building looking for offices or assistance. Your help with these small steps will make a huge difference in helping keep traffic away from the clinic and deliveries running smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation. Best Regards, Susie [University of Nebraska – Lincoln] Susie Fauble Administrative Coordinator Department of Food Science and Technology <https://foodsci.unl.edu/ > University of Nebraska-Lincoln Food Innovation Center, 1901 N 21st St, Room 232 Lincoln, NE 68588-6205 402-472-2905 Empathy / Strategic / Developer / Context / Belief

True to his Kentucky roots, Jason Carter pours all he has back into bluegrass. For thirty years, Carter has been the fiddle player for the Del McCoury Band, the most awarded group in bluegrass history. He has won three Grammy awards and has taken home five International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards for Fiddle Player of the Year, including 2018’s Best Bluegrass Album with the Travelin’ McCourys. As a fiddler, Carter has been featured on albums by Steve Earle, Ricky Skaggs, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, Vince Gill, Asleep at the Wheel and many more. On Carter’s solo album, ‘Lowdown Hoedown’, listeners may recognize instrumental contributions from such legends as Jerry Douglas or Sam Bush alongside vocals from young trailblazers like Sarah Jarosz or Billy Strings, with Carter singing lead. The Shucks Brothers, based in Lincoln, Neb., will kick off the evening with some serious string tickling and great harmony vocals. They tip their hats to the great old bluegrass masters such as Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers, but they also feature country, swing and red-hot instrumentals.
