Hello all –
We are in the process of updating the Big Ten Engagement listserv so you may be getting a couple of extra emails and calendar invites for a bit. It will give you the opportunity to use your delete key liberally!
Here are updates from our last meeting:
· You saw the message from Keith Marshall around taking on the Carnegie Elective Classification. Based on your responses, the timing isn’t right to do something collectively. We’ll see who applies.
· Our F2F meeting is confirmed for December 10-11 and the Big Ten Conference Center. Their remodeling is on hold so great for us! We’ve started to develop the agenda; keep the ideas coming!
· As to ideas….here’s what we discussed (some of these are follow-up from the June meeting):
• Engagement Advisory Boards
o Pros/Cons
o Structures/Models
• Engaged Research
• Expanded Partnerships with BTAA
• Advancement and Fund Raising (on-going topic)
• Future of Designations
o AAU
o Carnegie
o Others
• Data Mining
• Engagement Awards (will be at F2F, led by Burton Bargerstock, Michigan State & Nicole Nieto, Ohio State
Our next meeting is Friday, September 5 at 12:00 CT. I will be cancelling our old calendar invite and re-sending as we now have an updated membership list (attached).
Let me know what we’re missing! Great do be a part of such an amazing team!

Everyone:
My office sponsored a workshop this week over three days around ePortfolios as Rutgers does not have them. I am sharing the materials from the Presenter (Dr. Megan Mize from Old Dominion University). She is a friend of mine and has allowed me to share this with everyone. I would encourage you to reach out to her if you wish to do a full workshop or meet with her via Zoom. She is helping to build templates for different programs on our campus that can be utilized for easier distribution and creation by our students.
You can access the ePortfolio workshop materials here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mjRJHlD…

PS - we have started doing the research on oversight boards and will share that early next week based on the work our interns are gathering.

All –
As per our discussion last week, I reached out to Keith Marshall about the potential of the BTAA having a role in the leadership for the Carnegie Engagement designation. His response follows:
Thanks for your email. The key factor is what is meant by “taking this on.” The Big Ten Academic Alliance doesn’t have any funds and we aren’t staffed to take on a project like this, so we don’t have the resources to “take this on” for the benefit of Big Ten universities. If the money and staff are coming from other sources and we’re just being asked to manage it, then we would need the Provosts to approve this is an area of strategic importance that merits dedicating time and energy to support. Finally, if you just want to use our name as part of the application, we’d be happy to write a letter of support.
Given this, are we wanting to pursue any kind of joint effort? Any states wanting to partner? Or, do we put this on hold given our conversation about constraints and the magnitude of the ask?
Looking forward to your thoughts!
Kathleen
