Organizers hope to collect 3,500 items to support students facing food insecurity. Since the start of the fall semester, the pantry has served 874 total households and 1,800 individuals. In total, 16,505 items have been distributed to students and their families. Canned goods — such as soups, beans, fruits and vegetables — are among the most-needed items, along with personal hygiene products like toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant. Cash donations are also accepted, though Madison said the pantry relies heavily on physical items. Participants can give in several ways, including donating at collection bins located across the university, contributing monetarily, or purchasing items directly from the pantry’s Amazon Wish List. A Photography Exhibit by Jerri Reher Haussler On Display through December 21 The Link, 2nd Floor Gallery The exhibition Butterflies, Birds, Blooms and Bugs — Can You Find the Bugs? offers a glimpse of hope found in the beauty of the natural world that God has created. Through her lens, photographer Jerri Reher Haussler captures moments where His presence is revealed — in the pollen resting on the soft petals of wildflowers along a spring roadside, the sunlight glimmering on a bee’s translucent wings in a summer garden, the gentle movement of a butterfly as it drifts from flower to flower in the fall and the seedpod spilling lacy fluff from a milkweed as winter approaches. A self-taught photographer with an eye for detail, Jerri finds joy in observing and documenting the world around her. She is also a published author of Entrepreneurs of Hastings: Short Sketches of Some Nebraska Risktakers and Simple Faith, Mighty Faith: A 40-Lesson Devotional and Memoir. Jerri earned her B.A. in Business Education from Nebraska Wesleyan University and an M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She retired from Hastings College in 2002 as the Associate Dean of Students. Her photography has been displayed at the Minden Opera House and the Hastings Museum. All photos are available for purchase and would make a beautiful addition to your office, waiting area or children’s medical clinic. For purchase inquiries, Jerri can be reached at (402) 984-0250 or jerrihaussler(a)gmail.com<mailto:jerrihaussler@gmail.com>. Fill the Hefty Energy orange bag with clean, dry, hard-to-recycle plastics like plastic packaging, grocery bags, wrappers and foam products. * Don’t include recyclable plastics—keep those loose in your curbside recycling bin. 2. When full, tie up the orange bag and place it with your curbside recycling along with your normal recyclables. Why Should I Do It? Hefty diverts hard to recycle plastics from the landfill. The orange bag keeps otherwise nonrecyclable plastics from contaminating the recyclables plastics. Navigating the Glittering World of Chance and Choice
by altabunny9_at_gmail.com＠mail.d2l.msu.edu 06 Nov '25

06 Nov '25

The Casino Conundrum: Navigating the Glittering World of Chance and Choice Casinos have long captivated the human imagination, representing both the allure of instant wealth and the perils of financial ruin. These glittering palaces of chance have evolved from simple gambling halls into complex entertainment empires that span physical and digital realms. As society's relationship with gambling continues to transform, understanding the modern casino industry requires examining its multifaceted nature—from its psychological underpinnings to its economic impact and social responsibilities. https://hamiltongardens.org/visit/ The Architecture of Chance Modern casino design is a masterclass in environmental psychology. Walking through casino doors transports visitors into carefully crafted worlds where normal rules of time and space seem suspended. The strategic absence of clocks and windows creates what architects call a "timeless environment," while maze-like layouts encourage exploration and prolonged stays. Even the air is engineered—often enriched with oxygen to keep players alert and perfumed with subtle scents designed to trigger positive emotions. The sensory experience is equally calculated. Slot machines emit carefully calibrated sounds—loud enough to create excitement but not so overwhelming as to drive players away. The carpets feature busy patterns that hide stains while subtly encouraging guests to look up toward the more stimulating gaming tables and machines. Every element works in concert to create an atmosphere where rational decision-making gives way to emotional engagement. The Digital Transformation The rise of online casinos represents the industry's most significant evolution. Digital platforms have democratized access to gambling while introducing new challenges and opportunities. Today's virtual casinos offer immersive experiences that rival their physical counterparts, featuring live dealers, virtual reality environments, and social gaming elements that recreate the community atmosphere of traditional casinos. This digital revolution has also accelerated the integration of advanced technology. Artificial intelligence now powers personalized gaming experiences, while blockchain technology enables transparent transactions and provably fair games. Mobile apps have made casino games accessible anywhere, anytime, fundamentally changing how people engage with gambling entertainment. Economic Engine and Social Responsibility Casinos remain powerful economic forces in their communities, generating employment, tax revenue, and tourism. In markets like Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore, integrated casino resorts have become cornerstone developments that drive broader economic growth. However, this prosperity comes with significant social responsibilities that the industry increasingly acknowledges. Modern casino operators implement comprehensive responsible gambling programs that include: Self-exclusion systems Deposit and time limits Mandatory breaks Employee training to identify problematic behavior Funding for addiction treatment and research The most progressive operators recognize that sustainable success depends on balancing profitability with social responsibility. This evolving approach represents a significant shift from the industry's historical resistance to regulation. The Future of Casino Entertainment Looking ahead, several trends are shaping the next generation of casino experiences: Skill-based gaming: Incorporating elements of video gaming to attract younger audiences Esports betting: Tapping into the booming competitive gaming market Cryptocurrency integration: Expanding payment options and anonymity Hybrid experiences: Blending physical and digital gaming environments Wellness programming: Addressing the holistic experience of guests beyond gambling The casino of tomorrow will likely be less about pure gambling and more about integrated entertainment experiences that appeal to diverse consumer interests. The Player's Paradox For all the industry's evolution, the fundamental appeal of casinos remains unchanged: the thrilling possibility of turning a small wager into a life-changing sum. This dream, however unlikely statistically, continues to draw millions through casino doors—both physical and digital. The modern gambler faces a landscape of unprecedented choice, from traditional table games to sophisticated digital offerings, all while navigating the delicate balance between entertainment and excess. As the industry continues to evolve, the most successful operations will be those that recognize their role not just as purveyors of chance, but as stewards of responsible entertainment. The future of casinos lies in creating spaces where the thrill of possibility can be enjoyed within frameworks that prioritize customer well-being alongside business objectives. In this balancing act, the industry finds its greatest challenge—and its most promising opportunity.

by Silvana Martini 04 Nov '25

04 Nov '25

Hi all, We are all working hard to fulfill the recruiting needs since Sarah's departure. At this point, we are looking for 1 or 2 volunteers to help with an activity in Seward, NE on November 19th. Andreia will lead the activity and has everything planned, but we need some help... The activity will start at 9:30 am and will include 4 sessions that will end at 2:30 pm. The first two sessions will be covered by Andreia (and can train whoever volunteers to help), but she can't stay for the last 2 sessions since she has to teach... I would love to volunteer myself, but I have 2 important meetings that I can't move... so, I'll miss all the fun. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE volunteer if you can! Yes, I am begging again!!! Please let me know if you have the time to do this. Thanks! The orange bag keeps otherwise nonrecyclable plastics from containing the recyclables plastics. In today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, the manufacturing sector stands at the intersection of innovation and technology. From 3D printing (additive manufacturing) to CNC machining (subtractive manufacturing), modern engineers are required to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. Recognizing this growing need, the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering has established a ground-breaking partnership with LS Manufacturing, a leading global on-demand manufacturing company. This collaboration—centred around the University of Michigan manufacturing partnership initiative—aims to provide students with hands-on experience in additive and subtractive manufacturing education, bridging academic theory with real-world industrial practices. Together, they are shaping the next generation of manufacturing engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Introduction Manufacturing today is not just about producing parts; it’s about producing ideas, efficiency, and sustainability. The rise of additive manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, alongside traditional subtractive manufacturing methods like CNC machining, has transformed how engineers design, test, and create. Yet, one challenge remains constant in academia—how can students gain real-world manufacturing experience before entering the workforce? Hands-on education is crucial to understanding how concepts like material tolerances, design for manufacturability (DFM), and prototyping translate from theory into production. To address this, the University of Michigan Engineering Department, in partnership with LS Manufacturing, launched a forward-thinking initiative to blend classroom learning with industrial collaboration. This partnership emphasizes rapid prototyping for academic research, student project sponsorship in CNC machining, and opportunities for real-world manufacturing experience for students through capstone project sponsorships and innovation-focused technical grants. The Partnership’s Vision & Goals The University of Michigan manufacturing partnership with LS Manufacturing was born from a shared vision: to cultivate a new generation of engineers fluent in both the digital and physical realms of production. Goal 1: Enhance Student Learning At its core, the partnership focuses on improving how students learn and apply manufacturing principles. By providing access to industrial-grade manufacturing equipment, students can design, prototype, and refine projects using professional tools like high-precision CNC machines and advanced 3D printers. This approach transforms the University of Michigan’s classrooms and labs into dynamic, industry-connected learning environments. Students don’t just learn about manufacturing—they experience it firsthand. Goal 2: Bridge Theory and Practice Engineering theory provides the foundation for design, but practice makes it meaningful. Through this partnership, students engage directly with industry partners from University of Michigan Engineering and LS Manufacturing experts. They receive practical insights into design for manufacturability (DFM), rapid prototyping, and low-volume production—critical skills that align with modern industry expectations. For instance, when developing prototypes, students can leverage rapid prototyping for academic research, gaining experience in both additive and subtractive processes. This real-world engagement ensures they are not only technically proficient but also ready to innovate efficiently. Goal 3: Foster Innovation Innovation thrives at the intersection of creativity and capability. The University of Michigan partnership supports student-led initiatives such as the Solar Car Team, Robotics Club, and Formula SAE by providing manufacturing expertise, technical feedback, and production services. From concept sketches to final assembly, LS Manufacturing’s involvement helps these teams iterate faster and smarter. This collaboration empowers students to push the boundaries of engineering innovation while gaining the confidence to lead future industry breakthroughs.
